Duhawks Cruise into Break

For the second time in 10 days, the Loras women threw over 90 points on the scoreboard, this time against the visiting Cardinals from North Central.
The early going saw the Duhawks down 15-6 five minutes into the game but over the next 15:00 span, the Loras break would result in 41 points and a 18 point half time lead. That half saw 9 Duhawks see the scoring column, a 45% 3 point clip, 19 Duhawk free throw attempts, 22 bench points, and 20 points of North Central turnovers en route to a 47-29 halftime lead. Loras opened up the second half and increased its lead to as many as 22 in the second half before ending up with a final margin of 16.

On the afternoon, Loras made 33 trips to the free throw line, sinking 27 (81.8 percent) and shot 49% from the field for the game. The Duhawk bench outscored North Central 36-10.

Sarah Pillon paced the Duhawks with 24 points, as four Loras players ended the afternoon in double figures (Hudson 11, LaBadie 10, Sharp 10) Loras finished with 18 assists (9 by Morrissey). Pillon-7, Katie Wheeler-5, and Niki Rivera-5 paced the Duhawks on the boards.

The Duhawks head into finals week at 5-4 and will return on December 26th in preperation for their holiday tournament in Cleveland, OH.

Duhawks lose IIAC nailbiter

The Loras College women’s basketball team dropped their second straight home game to an IIAC by one point on Thursday night. The Wartburg Knights edged the Duhawks 62-61 in the AWC behind 16 points from Katie Zittergruen. Loras had two chances to win the game in the final seconds with both shots rimming out.

Lindsay Bava scored a game high 20 points for Loras and point guard Lisa Morrissey added 15 in the loss. Bava, Alex Hudson, and Sarah Pillon each had at least five rebounds for the Duhawks, who shot a season low 36% from the field for the game.

The Duhawks were even with the Knights in nearly every statistical category, but missed a total of 18 three point attempts and in the end made 20-of-55 field goals while the Knights made 23-of-55.

Loras fell into a group of teams at 1-2 early on in the Iowa Conference season. They will take the court again on Saturday in a non-conference tilt against North Central in the AWC. Tipoff is 2:00 PM and can be seen on the Duhawk Broadcast Network. Iowa Conference play resumes after the new year on January 6 at Luther College.

Duhawks make statement in battle for Dubuque bragging rights

The Loras College women’s basketball team opened the Iowa Conference portion of the schedule with a win on Wednesday night over the University of Dubuque at the Stoltz Center, home of the Spartans.

The 93-72 win was fueled by a balanced attack, aggressive rebounding, and a defense that forced 24 turnovers. Five players scored in double figures, including three off the bench, and seven players had at least eight points for the Duhawks. They also spread around their 47 rebounds (18 offensive), with five players pulling down at least four.

Over the course of the 40 minutes, Loras added 11 three point field goals on 20 attempts to help them post their best point total of the season with 93. The Duhawks had four players hit multiple threes, including Sarah Pillon’s 3-for-5 effort. Katie Wheeler added four steals for Loras, who essentially controlled the game from tipoff to final buzzer and led by as many as 27.

The Duhawks will host Buena Vista in the AWC on Saturday in their second IIAC game of the year at 2:00 pm. Loras swept the season series a year ago by a combined 11 points.

Loras holds North Park to 25% shooting in non-conference win

The tune of 25 deflections and black jerseys on the floor all day diving for loose balls set a tone on Saturday in Chicago. The Duhawk defense held the Vikings to a mere 16 second half points and started a winning streak in the meantime.

The Duhawks, now 3-2, were led by Lindsay Bava’s 17 points. Alex Hudson chipped in 13 and 7 rebounds in a very productive 17 minutes. Eleven others scored in the game for Loras who turned 21 Viking turnovers into 26 points, added 10 second chance points, and finished the game shooting 49% from the field. The Duhawks were 7-14 from long distance and also received 30 points off their bench, headlined by Lindsey LaBadie’s 7 and Mackenzie Roth and Katie Wheeler’s 5 a piece. In all, 17 Duhawks saw action!

The win has Loras above .500 heading into Iowa Conference action on December 2 at the University of Dubuque.
